Ibiza Horse valley’s herd

Unique horse human experiences with the herd of horses at Ibiza Horse Valley Sanctuary

What is a Herd?

People often misunderstand what a herd is. They may think that five or less horses in a field together constitute a herd. In reality, a herd is a natural survival system based on instincts. With domesticated horses, this natural system can establish itself only if uninterrupted living together (24/7) is provided. Ideally with a minimum of eight horses, a mix of mares and geldings of different ages, and plenty of space to move.

At Ibiza Horse Valley, our horses live in a free-roaming, fully integrated herd that reflects their natural way of life as closely as possible. They move across varied terrain, form deep bonds, choose who they spend time with, and live by the rhythms of nature, not the rhythms of control.

We support this natural lifestyle with the essentials: care, clean water, safe shelter, and one daily feeding to supplement their 24/7 access to hay. Beyond that, how they move, rest, relate, or engage with us is never forced.

To us, natural conditions mean creating an environment where horses can truly be horses. Individuals with their own characters, part of a social and survival system, making their own choices and fulfilling their own roles. They are not tools; they are beings with agency, instincts, and responsibilities within a living herd.

OUR herd:

Each horse is part of the whole, but each also holds a unique story.

Discover their names, their journeys, and what role they play in the greater field. Some were abandoned. Some came from years of trauma. Some endured years of exploitation at the hands of humans. All have something to teach, not through doing, but through being.

This is just the beginning of the introduction.

You’ll get to experience their stories, unique personalities, and behaviours firsthand when you visit the Valley.

    AURA

Born in Formentera in 2008, Aura joined The Valley in 2025 and is still in her rehabilitation period.

Her life before The Valley alternated between short periods of happiness and long stretches of separation, loneliness, and being misunderstood. Aura’s history shows in how she reaches out and tries to connect: she looks bold, but inside she’s still small and tender.

Restoring her broken trust and building her confidence will take time, and for now, she feels the safest with Peachy, whom she claimed upon arrival. There is a raw sweetness in her, and she is gradually discovering how to fully trust herself and trust others, both within the herd and with humans.

    BIJOU

Born in France in 2014, Bijou was bred to be a professional trotter. At the end of her career, she left France and was sold first to trotters associations in Mallorca and then in Ibiza. Her career ended and she was destined for slaughter, but her papers saved her life.

At 11 years old, The Valley is her 11th and final home. Recently introduced, Bijou is still in her rehabilitation program. She is incredibly wise, peaceful, and respectful, understanding boundaries within the herd. She is friendly to all herd members, showing no signs of frustration. With humans, she is shy, easily spooked, and only reaches when she feels safe.

She’s like a slowly opening flower and starts to share precious moments with tenderness and connection.

    CLOWN

Born in Germany in 2004, Clown came to Ibiza at three years old. Together with Manuel, he was one of the first two horses in The Valley.

His huge heart and gentle nature make him the cuddly giant of the herd, always up for a snack or a hug.

Before entering The Valley, he was bought because of his beauty to become a dressage horse, luckily this torture didn’t last too long since Clown’s build is absolutely not suited for dressage. Clown is highly ranked within the herd as the “food master” and is deeply respected by all. He is very sensitive and empathetic despite his bulky looks.

    FIONA

Born in Toledo, near Madrid, in 2008, Fiona was bred by her owner for his handicapped daughter. When the daughter’s condition worsened, Fiona was “jobless” and passed to a friend who knew The Valley, bringing her here.

Fiona has become our second alpha mare, succeeding Bella. Unlike Bella’s strict style, Fiona leads with kindness and calm authority. She has always had a soft spot for Nero, though this has not fully blossomed into a bond.

Fiona is caring, loves scratchies, and her sensitivity makes her one of the lead horses during somatic therapy sessions.

    FURIA

Born in Ibiza in 2008, Furia is a sassy, strong-willed mare who is small but thinks big and thus loves big horses. She initially thought she would become the food master but met her match in Clown. Eventually, they shared meals and became inseparable.

Furia’s main focus is food and Clown, but she is also affectionate and playful with humans. She is the typical hysterical, attention-seeking mare who knows how to get and hold the attention of the herd, especially the boys, that is, when she’s not eating.

    GEISHA

Born in Ibiza in 2007, Geisha arrived as a young mare with difficult behavior. She had a severe wound on her belly caused by flies, which explained her feisty and untouchable demeanor.

Over the years, Geisha evolved from a low-ranked, insecure mare into a middle high-ranked member of the herd. She serves as a bridge between the lower and higher-ranked horses, while still desperately seeking a partner.

Geisha is social, empathic, and strives to be part of the top group of the herd.

    JAGO

Born in Menorca in 2019, Jago joined The Valley at age five after being given up as a professional trotter.

Jago is our youngest family member, still very much a child. He is learning social boundaries, emotional control, and how to interact respectfully within the herd. He can get frustrated or act impulsively but is curious, funny, loving, and happy.

His learning process is natural and age-appropriate, not rehabilitation: he is naturally discovering his place in the herd.

    KAWA

Born in Ibiza in 2000, Kawa came from a young family who could no longer care for her. Upon arrival at The Valley, she instantly bonded with Tibou: a love at first sight that endures to this day.

Kawa and Tibou became the second alpha couple, in charge of daily order and herd management. Kawa’s confidence and decisiveness complement Tibou’s wisdom. Despite Tibou’s blindness and Kawa’s arthritis, they remain inseparable, living close to the herd but separated by a fence to accommodate Tibou’s needs.

    LILA

Born in Ibiza, Lila was locked in a tiny shack for four years, with her head hitting the roof and she developed problems with her balance. She was rescued by a neighbour and eventually brought to The Valley.

Initially ignorant, Lila spent 2 weeks at the bottom of the Valley, by invitations she gradually gained acceptance from the herd.

She is strong-minded, higher-ranked, and selective with humans: connecting deeply only with those she chooses.

    LUCKY

Born in New Forest, UK, in 2009, Lucky was born with a pigeon toe and was removed from the breeding program. Sold to a family with young kids, and moved with them to Ibiza and was housed at a riding stable. Once the kids outgrew Lucky, he joined The Valley at age nine, but labelled as dangerous.

Lucky is gentle, intelligent, and knows his space. He does not seek the top of the hierarchy but earns respect and recognition. He is playful and always attentive to the lower-ranked mares in the herd. He is ever so sweet with humans and loves to cuddle. There’s never been anything dangerous about him, he just needs the space and time to position his legs due the pigeon toe.

    NERO

Born in Menorca in 2006, Nero was already being ridden at age two. Upon arrival at The Valley, he displayed a unique behavior, immediately captivating the herd and us.

Nero has a different personality and often misapplies his behaviours. With humans, he is super sweet and connected but remains independent.

The herd understands and accepts him, and he is integrated despite his quirks.

    PEACHY

Born in Italy in 1998, Peachy came to The Valley with Status, her “arranged” companion. She has always been lower-ranked, highly empathic, and loyal to Status.

Peachy developed chronic asthma and Carpometacarpal (CMC) syndrome, a crippling osteoarthritis. Thanks to our sponsor, she uses a Flexineb E3 nebuliser to manage her asthma.

Despite health challenges, she receives all the love and care we can give, while she maintains her gentle, loyal nature.

    PIEPS

Born in Ibiza, Pieps was abandoned by her owner and survived as a stray. She was discovered by a German family, and together we rescued her, and that’s how she came to The Valley.

Pieps is small, wise, and middle-ranked, able to mingle with all herd members. She suffers from chronic sinusitis due to a bullet in her head and severe founder due to laminitis, which limits her mobility.

“Pieps’ Cozy Corner” in the top paddock allows her private feeding moments and care while still living amongst the herd. She is respected, intelligent, and beloved by all.

    STATUS

Born in Ireland in 2005, Status is a Thoroughbred racehorse whose career never matched expectations. He endured multiple owners, doping, and near-slaughter before finding safety at The Valley with Peachy.

Status remains loyal to Peachy, while also interacting with other mares. Injuries and hoof problems limit his ability to climb in rank, but he enjoys companionship, food, and affection.

He occasionally steps up to restore order in the herd and lives according to his age and health.

    TIBOU

Born in Ibiza in 1988, Tibou is our oldest and wisest family member at 37 years old. Initially a stray, he arrived as the third horse in The Valley and bonded with Kawa upon her arrival, forming the strongest love couple in The Valley.

Tibou and Kawa served as the second alpha couple, managing daily order and preventing conflicts. Despite losing both eyes, Tibou thrives with Kawa’s guidance, living next to the herd due to the challenging terrain: a safe and loving environment they share together to live their never-ending honeymoon.
